Surfside Science: Coastal Ecosystem Monitoring

Metabolic Foundation Aruba received €150,290 from the RESEMBID programme to validate methods for monitoring coastal and marine ecosystems, with Surfside Bay in Aruba as a case study. The goal is to enhance access to data collection systems on small islands, sharing methods and findings openly. Surfside Science will follow standard scientific methods to validate systems, aiming to install five sensors at Surfside Bay.


These systems include sensors, satellite imagery, underwater photos analyzed with AI and citizen science. The project aims to strengthen Aruba’s resilience against climate change, with all data publicly accessible.

United Farmers Aruba (UFA), a foundation representing local small and medium-sized farmers (SMFs), is driving digital innovation in agriculture. By participating in the EU-funded PHITO project and securing €119,250 from the Horizon Europe program, UFA helps farmers modernize their practices. The project’s digital platform provides free and tailored advice on soil, water and crops, improving decision-making and enhancing both economic and environmental sustainability. Through this initiative, UFA fosters greater collaboration among farmers and strengthens local agricultural knowledge. This support bridges the digital divide, ensuring SMFs on Aruba can compete and thrive in today’s digital economy.

Empowering Local Farmers with Digital Innovation

Aruba Conservation Foundation (ACF), in partnership with Wageningen University & Research, ScubbleBubbles, and the University of Aruba, has launched the “Turning the Tide” project. This 15-month initiative focuses on the hands-on restoration of coral reefs and mangroves to combat environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. With €713,000 in funding from RESEMBID and Wageningen University, the project aims to create a healthier, more resilient marine environment. Integrated into the management of Parke Marino Aruba, the project ensures long-term benefits and sustainability for the island’s marine ecosystems. RESEMBID, funded by the EU, supports 48 projects in the region.
